Disability and Documentary Filmmaking

A hybrid event between D-Word and FWD-Doc. Here, I moderated a 90-minute open conversation amongst 100 attendees about what it means to have a disability as a documentary filmmaker, what it means to work with a filmmaker with a disability, how to have open conversations about disability, and how to foster a more inclusive and equitable entertainment industry.

Disability and Parenting

I was graciously invited to join Dr. Amanda Zelechoski, co-founder of Pandemic Parenting, in interviewing parents about their experiences with disability, and their experiences parenting a child with a disability. In the first episode listed, I had the honor of interviewing my own dad about his experience with depression.

Authentically Representing Mental Health On-Screen While Prioritizing It Off-Screen

RespectAbility presented this conversation in partnership with Women In Film to celebrate the second annual Mental Health Action Day. As the global conversation around mental health continues, finding effective resources and knowing how to get help remains a challenge.

In this panel conversation, we discussed ways to accurately and authentically represent mental health on-screen, while also prioritizing one's own mental health in an industry that hasn’t traditionally given folks the space to do so. I had the pleasure of being on this panel alongside Ali MacLean and Laquana Lightfoot. The conversation was expertly moderated by Nikki Bailey.

Disability and Producing/Documentary Filmmaking as a Career

I had the honor of interviewing Thea Flaum about her legendary producing career and pivot to disability advocacy.

I also had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Lauterbach and Reveca Torres about their experiences with disability, documentary filmmaking, and how emerging documentary filmmakers with disabilities can advocate for themselves and others to create a more accessible industry.

These interviews were featured on The Pursuit, a NATAS Chicago/Midwest Podcast.

Diversability Mixer: Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Diversability held a community mixer for the disability community to come together and talk about accessibility. I led an open discussion about film and video, and ways the entertainment industry can improve the accessibility of their content and events. We also talked about the representation we see or don't see on screen.
